Isn't it funny how we only spring into action when we're warned about a power outage, but never think twice about unexpected ones? Ohio Edison recently dropped the news that there's a planned outage this coming Monday from 8 AM till 2 PM. Well, shoot, I don’t want that at my place! A whole day without TV? Internet? Heck no! So, it’s off to Home Depot for a couple of Uninterruptible Power Supplies. Let the games (and binge-watching) continue uninterrupted!
I have one of those TP-LINK Deco "Mesh" AP's (Access Points) off my Spectrum Modem. The Mesh systems consist of two or more APs and allow for a single SID (wifi name) to be used as devices move among the APs (Like Cell phones moving among towers). The Master AP is in my bedroom (where the spectrum cable / modem is located) and the slave AP is in the Living room where the TV (and most of the action) is located.
So both units need the UPS to keep running when the power goes out. At $69 each that is a no brainier to keep the binge watching going on. (grin) And it doesn't hurt that surge protection is built in.
Next: Lighting and Alexa! My home is all "Alexa-ed" up. Thirty WiFi devices of which 16 are LED smart lights all controlled via voice command. So I need at least two of those lights backed up via UPS as well. PS: Because they are LED the power consumption is almost Nil, in comparison with a typical light bulb.
Next: Alexa Devices to command the lights, TV and FB Portal (yea wait for it). The Bedroom Echo Dot hears me tell it "Good Night" after I crawl in bed and the Good Night Routine runs. (Turns off any Lights; Turns off any Appliances like electric heaters in the winter; Arms the security camera; Locks the front door; ... and sets the Air Purifier to Sleep Mode.) The Good Morning routine pretty much is the opposite of the Good Night Routine.... but also starts a quiet "Smooth Jazz" playing on all Alexa Devices.
TV + Facebook Portal: The FB portal allows for FB Messenger video calls on the huge TV screen. It includes a camera that follows me around the room as I move. So even this continues to work during a power outage.
How Long will it run everything? It advertises a little over 5 hours. I assume that is with a computer being backed up. In the bedroom the power consumption is a fraction of that. The Living Room has a TV on it. So Today I will pull the power on both units and see how long they run. Then update this Post.
In the meantime: "Alexa, Open Prime Video on Roku TV".
