Living in Ohio, I have become acutely aware of the differences in lifestyle and costs between Ohio and Pennsylvania. The simple, not-so-imaginary OH/PA line makes a huge difference.
Gas Prices
One of the most noticeable differences is in gas prices. In Ohio, gas prices at the pump are typically 20 cents a gallon cheaper than in Pennsylvania. I have even seen them as much as 30 cents a gallon less. For a typical 15-gallon fill-up, this results in a savings of $4.50 in Ohio per fill up.
Grocery Shopping Experience
Recently, I visited a grocery store in Pennsylvania. After doing some shopping, I walked into their beer cooler and grabbed a six-pack. At the register, the cashier informed me that I needed to take the beer back near the cooler and press a button to have someone check me out at a special checkout for the beer, where I had to pull out my ID. I'm 71 people. What ever happened to common sense. Additionally, when I asked for a couple of packs of cigarettes, I was told I must go to a special counter to purchase them, where I had to pull out my ID AGAIN! Now its just stupid. This level of inconvenience was surprising.
Convenience in Ohio
In contrast, about four miles from where I live in Ohio, there is a small, local grocery store called "Super Duper." At this store, I can pay for my food, beer, and cigarettes all at the same checkout counter, without any additional hassle, and NO ID ever requested. They can SEE my age. duh! The convenience and simplicity of shopping in Ohio are much appreciated.
Conclusion
These experiences have led me to avoid shopping or buying gas in Pennsylvania whenever possible. The differences in costs and convenience between the two states are significant, and I am learning to make choices that benefit my lifestyle and budget.
