RV Troubles
RV Troubles
From Day One, I’ve been in a full-on war with the RV-to-5th-wheel cable connection on my rig.
You’d think an old Electrical Tech like me would nail this blindfolded. Nope. Turns out when the hair turns gray, the brain cells start filing for early retirement.
Sure, there’s a perfectly good, simple plug on the back of most trucks that the trailer can just click into. Easy. Reliable. Normal.
But noooo… not me. I had to go full mad scientist because I wanted to use my fancy inertial brake controller to actually brake the 5th wheel like a civilized human.
So I custom-wired the whole thing: starting from the OEM outlet under the bumper, running it up into the bed, mounting the brake controller on the sidewall like it was modern art, then running another cable to a custom outlet I fabbed on top of the bed rail.
I’ve wired and rewired this cursed setup at least half a dozen times before I finally got it working properly.
Then when doing my lights check from the last place I stayed to here, the stupid RIGHT turn signal on the RV was on constant. So for that trip I simply plugged the 5th wheel straight into the lower back of truck and ran without tailer brakes.
I have now spent DAYS trouble shooting this thing... First I replaced my Top OF truck outlet as I was sure that my sorry mess was the issue.
Nope ... that did not fix it. I un wired the brake controller and totally removed the line from the back of truck and finally found it... THE STORE BOUGHT PLUG DEVELOPED A SHORT! UGH This was NOT on me! I did not wire it. It came wired and sealed!
