McBride Canyon Campground Review
McBride Canyon Campground Review
I recently stayed at McBride Canyon Campground and overall had a great experience!
When I first arrived, I parked in a spot just before the actual campground because it looked like a legitimate camping site. I ended up staying there for 14 nights. One day, a ranger knocked on my door — I was sure he was going to tell me to move along. Instead, he was super nice and just let me know I needed to move down into the official campground. It honestly seemed like I was the first person he’d checked on in a while!....

The road into the campground starts with a moderate downhill, then makes a sharp right and gets quite steep. If you’re towing, I highly recommend using low gear or tow-haul mode.
The first area you come to (near the old McBride home) has three or four campsites. That’s where I originally stayed because I was nervous about going further on down a one lane road and not being able to turn around. The actual campground is a little further down on the left.
**What I loved:**
- It’s incredibly quiet and peaceful — perfect for solitude camping.
- There’s tons of wildlife! I had a wonderful time using the Merlin Bird ID app (from Cornell Lab) and added **20 new species** to my life list.
- I saw roadrunners constantly, but they’re so fast I never managed to get a photo. (And no, I never heard one say “beep beep”!)
I also flew my drone quite a bit and captured some beautiful videos of the area, including footage right above the historic McBride home. You can watch them all here:
