Ackerman, Mississippi.
Why the hell am I in the middle of nowhere Mississippi right now?
Somewhere around here is the Tallahassee Bridge where Billy Joe McAllister famously yeeted her baby off of. (At least that’s what the song says.)
It all started as a glorious plan: 14 days of free camping at some “hidden gem” according to the Campendium app. Reviews were glowing. 5 stars. People were practically writing poetry about it.
Then I got there… and the road was closed. The whole campground was closed. Gate locked. Not even a polite “sorry” sign. Just pure “go away” energy.
After a brutally long day of driving, I said screw it, turned around, and headed south like a lost man fleeing the scene of his own bad decisions. That’s how I ended up at Choctaw Lake State Park — officially in the middle of freaking nowhere, paying $20 a night to camp in what feels like the actual set of Deliverance.
I’m now so far east I can almost smell Alabama, and a million miles from any free dispersed camping or the Oklahoma Route 66 path I was supposed to be on.
But good news: I think I finally found a way out of this godforsaken state and back on track.
Pray for me, y’all. Or at least send snacks and better navigation skills.
