**Johnstown Flood** (St. Patrick’s Day Flood) — March 17–18, 1936

- Family lived in a home near the river. As waters rose, someone drove up yelling for them to get in the car immediately and “bring only pillows.” They crossed the bridge and went up a hill; the bridge washed away an hour later.
- A relative refused to leave and had to be rescued by boat from the second floor. The family later returned to find feet of mud on the lower floor, which was removed with pick axes.
- Around this period, their father worked in Monaca (Rheem) and commuted Sundays to Fridays. During the flood, it took him three days to return home, mostly hitchhiking.

- Shirley’s earliest memory: Railroad tracks and a river behind the house. Hobos camped nearby; their mother often gave food to a hobo on the back porch. A chalk mark on the back fence signaled that food was available.
- When Jeanne was born, young Shirley and Patti were convinced the doctor brought the baby in his black bag.
